Local Area
Dean Street Mews
A lively urban village in the heart of the capital (location map), Stockbridge is an area that echoes with its bohemian past. With more than its fair share of artists, musicians and writers, there are studios tucked away in every mews. This is a vibrant living community in which everyone still shops in the local shops, knowing it’s only a ten minute walk to the heart of Edinburgh (and five minutes on the way back down).
The best way to experience Stockbridge is to take a seat in one of the many cafés and watch the world go by – or get lost in the backstreets and find your own ‘undiscovered’ Edinburgh. A stay in Dean Street Mews puts you right in the heart of it all.
The New Town Mews
Those with a hankering for the refinement of Edinburgh’s stunning New Town can base themselves in this airy mews flat, situated midway between the bohemian delights of Stockbridge and Edinburgh’s central George Street (location map).
Tucked away in a traditional mews lane behind one of the New Town’s impressive streets, the New Town Mews offers contemporary refinement within enviable and elegant Georgian proportions. The centre of town is just a five minute walk up hill – the Old Town just five minutes further – if, of course, you don’t get waylaid in one of the area’s many delightful bars and cafes.
Circus Mews
Technically, Circus Mews is on the edge of the New Town (location map). However, if you walk to the west end of the mews lane, you are in Stockbridge. This is therefore the perfect location to take advantage of both the areas described above.
Cumberland Mews
Located on the East side of the New Town (location map) this mews offers more than enough space for the family. The local shopping area of Broughton Street is just five minutes away and has everything you could need.
Whichever location you choose, you won’t be disappointed !

Explore
Edinburgh, with its thriving capital buzz, its international arts scene and its stunning Old and New Towns, is small and beautiful enough to make walking the perfect way to get around. A ten minute stroll will take you to the high point of the New Town at George Street, but push on five minutes more and you’ll find yourself at the Castle, with breathtaking views back down to the New Town and Stockbridge.
A more peaceful local stroll up the leafy Water of Leith walkway – a few minutes from the Mews - takes you to the Dean Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art in only 20 minutes. It’s fantastic for art lovers, but its outdoor café is also a great spot for a cultural lunch on a sunny day. The Royal Botanic Gardens, with its idyllic Inverleith House art gallery is just a few minutes in the other direction.
And if walking doesn’t fit your remit for a relaxing getaway, local buses will take you to the city centre in minutes for theatres, concerts halls, lively bars and nightclubs, or a (gentle) stroll around the National Galleries.
Eat
Stockbridge has a fantastic range of local food shops, from Herbie’s delicatessen to Mellis’ Cheesemonger, from The Store, Stockbridge’s own city-centre farm shop, to Armstrong's, the award-winning fishmonger, and the excellent (and very cheeky) butcher, George Bower. Wander uptown to discover more foodie delights such as the famous Valvona and Crolla – but make sure you stop off on the way in Patisserie Florentin for coffee and Belgian waffles. And if you're staying in the New Town Mews, try the Glass & Thompson café/deli, just around the corner.
Dining out, try Bell’s Diner’s legendary gourmet burgers or go for the more sophisticated art-filled walls and delicious seasonal menu of the upmarket Stockbridge Restaurant. A short walk up town will take you to the delicious Italian Centotre or an umissable dinner in The Witchery by the Castle.
Drink
If all this delicious food puts you in the mood for some good wine, there’s the Edinburgh Wine Company, two minutes walk from the Mews, (vintners to Oxford and Cambridge University Colleges - you can’t go wrong), or Raeburn Fine Wines at the other end of Stockbridge's main street. Peckhams does a great selection of mainstream and artisan beers.
Local bars range from the unpretentious Baillie to the more stylish Hectors, with other nearby options including fashionable Iglu, with its organic restaurant upstairs, and the diminutive and very traditional Kay’s Bar, complete with characterful proprietor and rolling roster of guest ales.
Shop
From the Mews, the shopping hubs of George Street and Princes Street are just 15 minutes walk away, where you’ll find everything from chic boutiques to the city’s famous Jenners department store and Harvey Nics.
Closer to home is St Stephen’s Street, whose vintage clothes shops, alongside Stockbridge’s high quality charity shops, make an idyllic afternoon’s browsing.
Stockbridge, and the art galleries of the New Town's nearby Dundas Street - where you'll also find numerous fine art and antique shops - are also hubs for artist-designed jewellery, as well as Edinburgh’s only vintage jewellery store, the fabulous Chic and Unique.
Get Away
Of course, you could just skip town completely for the day – the Forth Road Bridge, which takes you to all points North is just 20 minutes drive west on the road out of Stockbridge, and there’s easy access to the M8 if you fancy a trip to Glasgow or Loch Lomond.
